The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. We have been part of the Gulf Coast community for more than 35 years and work in every Gulf state, from Florida to Texas and even Mexico and the Caribbean. From restoring oyster reefs to helping create and expand state parks and national wildlife refuges, the Conservancy works with partners to restore the Gulf’s most important habitats and the benefits they bring to people. The Ocean Foundation

The Ocean Foundation is a unique community foundation based in Washington, D.C., with a mission to support, strengthen, and promote those organizations dedicated to reversing destruction of ocean environments around the world.  Our Gulf Restoration Fund, with staff in Mobile, supports efforts to restore the coastal and marine ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico.


The Foundation raises millions of dollars each year to support marine conservation, increasing the capacity of conservation organizations, hosting projects and funds, and supporting those working to improve the health of ocean species globally.  The Ocean Foundation Board of Directors is comprised of individuals with significant experience in marine conservation philanthropy, complemented by an expert, professional staff, and a growing international advisory board of scientists, policy makers, educational specialists, and other top experts.

 

Alabama Wildlife Federation

The Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) is the oldest and largest non-profit conservation organization in Alabama. The AWF was established by sportsmen in 1935 to promote the conservation and wise use of our wildlife and natural resources and to ensure a high quality of life for future generations of Alabamians. 

 

Auburn University

Auburn University was established in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. In 1872, under the Morrill Act, the school became the first land-grant college in the South and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1899 the name again was changed, to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Finally, in 1960 the name of the school was changed to Auburn University, a title more in keeping with its location, and expressing the varied academic programs and larger curriculum of a major university.

Today, Auburn is one of the few universities to carry the torch as a land, sea and space grant university. Our Fall 2010 semester enrollment was 25,078. Our students can choose from more than 140 degree options in 13 schools and colleges at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.

Auburn University has developed into one of the largest universities in the South, remaining in the educational forefront with its traditional blend of arts and applied science, and changing with the needs of today while living with a respect for the traditions and spirit that are Auburn.

Community of Christ Church

The Community of Christ Church is an international Christian church with 250,000 members found in more than fifty nations. Our International Headquarters, including a Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, is located in Independence, Missouri. The church was organized in 1830 in New York State. 

 

Dauphin Island Sea Lab

As a marine laboratory the DISL’s mission encompasses marine science education, marine science research, coastal zone management policy and educating the general public through the Estuarium, DISL’s public aquarium. Founded in 1971 by the State Legislature, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) is Alabama’s marine science education and research laboratory.

Ducks Unlimited conserves, restores, and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl. These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people.

Mobile County Wildlife and Conservation Association

Mobile County Wildlife and Conservation Association is the oldest conservation organization in Alabama and a non-profit directly involved in conservation, restoration and enhancement of the natural resources of Mobile County and the surrounding areas. Although primarily concerned with wildlife habitat, MCWCA is focused on environmental and recreation issues related to hunting and fishing in South Alabama.

Weeks Bay Foundation

The Weeks Bay Foundation was incorporated in 1990 as a non-profit organization to support the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in its efforts to protect the pristine coastal area of Baldwin County , Alabama . The Foundation, with over 550 members, supports the Reserve through donations of land and educational exhibits, public awareness and education programs, water quality monitoring efforts, and volunteer programs.

Mayor Tim Kant, elected in August 2000 after Nix's retirement, has served the city since 1983, first as city horticulturist and later as Public Works Superintendent.
